PALS is geared towards healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and for personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.
Before taking PALS, students should have a mastery of BLS skills and a current, non-expired AHA BLS Provider certification (we will ask to make a copy of your card when you arrive for class). If you do not have a current BLS Provider card, you can take the blended Heartcode BLS (click here for more information) and a skills check will be completed during your PALS course. A student should also be able to recognize various heart rhythms, be familiar with different types of airway management tools and their use and have knowledge of the drugs commonly used to treat cardiovascular irregularities.
To help students adequately prepare for the PALS Course, the AHA requires that each student complete the mandatory online PALS Precourse Assessment, available through the AHA Student Website www.heart.org/eccstudent. The precourse self-assessment code will be sent in your confirmation email.
The Precourse Self-Assessment is an online tool that evaluates a student’s knowledge in 3 sections: rhythm recognition, pharmacology, and practical application. Students complete the assessment before the course to help evaluate their proficiency and determine the need for additional review and practice before the course. All students must complete the Precourse Self-Assessment and achieve a score of at least 84% before taking the PALS Course. You can take the precourse self-assessment as many times as you need to achieve a passing score. Students must print their successful completion certificate and bring it with them to class.
